About Grotte du Trabuc

Deep in the Cévennes near Anduze, the Grotte de Trabuc is the largest cave in the region and one of its most mysterious, once a refuge for outlaws and Protestant rebels whose name — from the blunderbuss, the trabuc — it still bears. Its guided galleries wind past thundering underground cascades, deep still lakes and vast chambers of fine concretions. But its unique wonder is the enigmatic "Hundred Thousand Soldiers": a field of thousands of tiny, identical stalagmite-like formations, ranked like a phantom army, whose origin still puzzles scientists. Atmospheric, varied and steeped in the turbulent history of the Cévennes, the Grotte de Trabuc offers one of the most memorable and intriguing cave visits in southern France, combining natural spectacle with genuine geological mystery.
