At the head of a magnificent reculée near Arbois — one of the great box-canyons that notch the edge of the Jura plateau — the Grottes des Planches nestle where the river Cuisance bursts from the foot of towering limestone cliffs. The cave follows the underground course of the river through galleries scoured smooth by rushing water, revealing potholes, subterranean rapids and fine concretions, with the resurgence itself thundering out in spring floods. Above ground, the visit is set amid the spectacular amphitheatre of cliffs of the reculée, a landscape of great natural grandeur. Combining an intriguing water-carved cave with one of the most beautiful settings in the Jura, the Grottes des Planches and their reculée offer a refreshing and scenic outing in the vineyard country around Arbois.
