About Grottes de Choranche
Set beneath towering cliffs in the wild heart of the Vercors, the Grottes de Choranche are among the most magical show-caves in France, celebrated for a wonder found in few others: thousands of extraordinarily fine, translucent "fistulous" stalactites — hollow tubes of calcite thin as drinking straws — hanging in dense curtains and mirrored in a still underground lake. The reflection of these fragile white needles in the perfectly calm water, dramatised by careful lighting, creates a scene of unearthly beauty. The visit also reveals a resurgence river, fine concretions and even the rare olm-like cave fauna. Framed by the immense limestone ramparts of the Vercors, the cave is as spectacular outside as within. Delicate, luminous and unforgettable, the Grottes de Choranche are a jewel of the Alpine underground.
