About Grottes de Maxange
Discovered only in 2000 during quarrying near Le Buisson-de-Cadouin in the Dordogne, the Grottes de Maxange are a young star among French show-caves, celebrated for an exceptional concentration of rare "eccentric" crystals — delicate, gravity-defying formations that twist and branch in every direction, as if the rules of dripping water had been suspended. These strange, coral-like growths, among the finest displays of eccentrics in France, cluster alongside more classic stalactites and draperies in a compact, well-lit circuit that is easy and comfortable to visit. The result is an intimate underground jewel-box, all the more remarkable for having been hidden until so recently. Rare, beautiful and geologically fascinating, the Grottes de Maxange are a sparkling addition to the great cave country of the Périgord.
