About Grottes de St Cézaire
In the hills above the Côte d'Azur near Grasse, the Grottes de Saint-Cézaire are among the most colourful show-caves in France, remarkable for the warm red and ochre tones of their concretions, stained by the iron-rich earth above. Discovered in the 1890s, the cave is a fairyland of delicate draperies, slender columns and formations shaped like flowers, animals and organ-pipes — and the guide famously taps some of these to make them ring like a natural xylophone, so pure is their crystalline stone. Cool and richly decorated, with evocatively named chambers, it offers a magical escape from the summer heat. Vivid, musical and beautiful, the Grottes de Saint-Cézaire are one of the most charming underground attractions of the Provençal hinterland behind the Riviera.
