About Île d'Oléron

Linked to the mainland by a long bridge, the Île d'Oléron is the largest French island on the Atlantic coast and one of the sunniest, a gentle expanse of oyster beds, salt marshes, pine forest and golden beaches in Charente-Maritime. Its sheltered eastern shore is the realm of oyster and mussel farmers, their brightly painted cabins lining tidal channels, while the wild west coast offers long surf beaches and the great Chassiron lighthouse at the island's tip. White-washed villages, colourful ports, cycle paths and the offshore silhouette of Fort Boyard complete the picture. Easy-going, luminous and rich in seafood, Oléron is a much-loved holiday island where flat cycling, wide beaches and briny flavours define the rhythm of a slow Atlantic summer.
