About Île d'Yeu

A rugged jewel off the Vendée coast, the Île d'Yeu is a small island of two contrasting faces: a gentle, dune-fringed northern shore of white sandy beaches and the whitewashed harbour of Port-Joinville, and a wild southern coast of jagged granite cliffs, hidden coves and heath. Its emblem is the Vieux-Château, a dramatic medieval fortress clinging to a rocky spur above the crashing Atlantic. Reached by ferry from the mainland, the island is explored above all by bicycle, on lanes winding between little ports, menhirs and clifftop paths. With its clear light, pine woods and salt-scented air, the Île d'Yeu combines the charm of a Breton island with the softer warmth of the Atlantic — a timeless, car-light escape.
