About Île de Groix

Off the port of Lorient in southern Brittany, the Île de Groix is a compact island of dramatic cliffs, wild heath and a rare natural treasure: the Plage des Grands Sables, one of the very few convex beaches in Europe, whose curve of shell-sand slowly shifts around the coast. Once a great tuna-fishing island — a symbol still tops its church steeple — Groix keeps a strong maritime character in its whitewashed port of Loctudy and its coastal hamlets. Its geologically celebrated cliffs, rich in garnet and rare minerals, form a protected nature reserve loved by walkers and geologists alike. Reached by ferry from Lorient and best explored by bicycle, Groix is a wild, characterful island of cliffs, beaches and salt-sea heritage.
