About Île de Sein

Barely rising above the waves off the Pointe du Raz, the Île de Sein is a flat, treeless island so low that a great storm could almost sweep across it, ringed by fearsome reefs and guarded by the lonely Ar-Men lighthouse, one of the most storied in the world. Car-free and huddled against the Atlantic wind, its whitewashed houses line lanes barely wider than a person. The island holds a proud place in French history: in June 1940, almost all its men crossed to England to join the Free French, and de Gaulle honoured Sein as a symbol of resistance. Reached by ferry from Audierne, this wild, humble island offers an unforgettable sense of life lived on the very edge of the sea.
