About Île du Levant

The easternmost of the Îles d'Or off Hyères, the Île du Levant is a long, narrow ridge of sun-baked scrub rising steeply from the Mediterranean, an island of two very different worlds. Most of it is a military zone, closed to the public, but at its western tip lies the village of Héliopolis, founded in the 1930s as one of the first naturist colonies in France and still a famous, easy-going naturist resort. Steep paths lead down through fragrant maquis to rocky coves and clear water. Reached by boat from Le Lavandou or Hyères, sun-drenched and unconventional, the Île du Levant offers a warm, laid-back Mediterranean escape unlike anywhere else along the Riviera coast.
