About Îles Sanguinaires

Guarding the mouth of the Gulf of Ajaccio, the Îles Sanguinaires are a small archipelago of reddish rock famed above all for their sunsets, when the granite islets and the sea around them seem to catch fire in blood-red light — the origin, some say, of their name. Crowned by an old Genoese watchtower, a lighthouse and the ruins where the writer Alphonse Daudet set one of his most famous tales, the islands are a protected nature reserve rich in seabirds and rare plants. The mainland headland of La Parata offers a celebrated viewpoint and coastal walks, and boat trips circle the islets from Ajaccio. Wild, crimson and unforgettable at dusk, the Sanguinaires are one of the great natural sights of Corsica.
