About La Soufrière

Towering over the rainforests of Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe, La Soufrière — affectionately known as "la vieille dame", the old lady — is an active volcano and, at 1,467 metres, the highest peak in the Lesser Antilles. Its steaming summit dome, streaked with sulphurous fumaroles and often wrapped in cloud, is reached by a demanding but popular trail that climbs through lush tropical forest into a stark, misty world of steaming vents and volcanic rock. The mountain, which last erupted violently in 1976, is closely monitored, and the ascent rewards hikers with an extraordinary contrast between jungle and bare, hissing summit. Powerful, mysterious and alive, La Soufrière is the brooding natural crown of Guadeloupe and one of the great volcanoes of the French tropics.
