About Lac Chambon

A shallow, sun-warmed lake in the Monts Dore of Auvergne, the Lac Chambon was formed when a volcanic eruption dammed a mountain valley. Its calm, easily-warmed water and grassy, sandy beaches make it one of the friendliest swimming lakes in the region, especially for families, with pedal boats, windsurfing and lakeside cafés around the shore. Above it rise the jagged Roches Tuilière and Sanadoire and the medieval Château de Murol, giving walks and drives a dramatic volcanic backdrop. Close to the peaks of the Sancy massif and the spa town of Le Mont-Dore, Chambon is a relaxed, scenic base for exploring the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes on foot, by bike or simply from a towel on the beach.
