About Lac de Gaube
Cradled beneath the great north face of the Vignemale, the highest peak of the French Pyrenees, the Lac de Gaube is one of the most celebrated glacial lakes in the range. Its cold, clear water mirrors the snow-streaked summit above, a view that enchanted 19th-century Romantic travellers and still stops walkers in their tracks today. Set within the Pyrenees National Park above the spa town of Cauterets, it is reached by a scenic trail from the Pont d'Espagne — or, more easily, by chairlift and a short walk. Marmots whistle among the boulders, waterfalls thread the slopes, and higher paths climb on toward the Vignemale glaciers. Gaube is the classic Pyrenean postcard: still water, sharp peaks and pure mountain air.
