About Lac de Longemer
A little upstream from Gérardmer, the Lac de Longemer is a long, narrow glacial lake set among meadows and spruce forest on the commune of Xonrupt-Longemer. Quieter and wilder than its famous neighbour, it is a favourite of the Vosges "green tourism" scene: swimming from grassy banks, fishing, canoeing and gentle walks with the wooded ridges of the Hautes-Vosges rising on every side. A small chapel and scattered farms give the valley an old-fashioned charm, and the nearby Lac de Retournemer and the Route des Crêtes make it a fine base for exploring the high massif. In autumn the surrounding forests blaze with colour, mirrored in the still water — a peaceful, unhurried mountain retreat.
