About Lac de Vouglans

Snaking for more than 30 kilometres through the wooded gorges of the southern Jura, the Lac de Vouglans is the third-largest artificial lake in France — a startling ribbon of jade-green water held back by a great arch dam on the river Ain. Steep forested slopes plunge straight into the reservoir, giving it a wild, secretive feel, while three supervised beaches, a marina and boat cruises open it up to visitors. Swimming, sailing, kayaking and cliff-lined walks are the main draws, and the surrounding plateau hides caves, waterfalls and the medieval abbey ruins of the Jura. With its vivid colour and canyon setting, Vouglans is one of the most striking bodies of water in eastern France.
