About Lac des Bouillouses
On the high Capcir plateau at the foot of the Carlit massif, the Lac des Bouillouses is a granite-rimmed reservoir sitting above 2,000 metres in the eastern Pyrenees — and the gateway to one of the great walking areas of the region. Around it stretches a wild expanse of moorland, pine and dozens of smaller glacial lakes, protected as a nature reserve and best explored on the celebrated Carlit lakes circuit. To preserve the fragile high country, summer access is by shuttle bus, leaving the shore to hikers, anglers and photographers drawn by the crystalline water and huge mountain skies. Cool even in high summer and snowbound in winter, Bouillouses is pure Pyrenean high country, raw and luminous.
