On the forested slopes of the Montagne de Reims, amid the great Champagne vineyards, the Faux de Verzy are one of the strangest and most magical woods in France — a rare grove of dwarf, twisted beech trees found almost nowhere else on Earth. Through a genetic quirk, these "faux" grow low and gnarled, their branches curling and drooping to the ground to form living arbours and grotesque, contorted shapes, some centuries old. Wandering the marked paths among them feels like stepping into an enchanted forest from a fairy tale, all the more atmospheric in mist. Protected as a natural curiosity, the site also offers fine viewpoints over the vineyards below. Unique, mysterious and utterly captivating, the Faux de Verzy are one of the most remarkable botanical wonders in France.
