About Les pans d’ardoise Travassac

Near Donzenac in the Corrèze, the Pans de Travassac are a spectacular slate site where centuries of quarrying have laid bare a dramatic landscape of towering blades of blue-grey rock — sheer walls of slate, some fifty metres high, separated by deep, narrow chasms. Slate has been split here since the 17th century, and today the site keeps the craft alive: skilled workers still cleave and shape the rock by hand in vertiginous demonstrations, revealing how the fine roofing slate that clads so many Limousin buildings is made. Marked walkways thread between the great vertical slabs, offering a striking, almost architectural spectacle of stone. Dramatic, atmospheric and rooted in living craft tradition, the Pans de Travassac are one of the most original natural-and-industrial sites in central France.
