About Marie-Galante

A large, almost perfectly round island off the coast of Guadeloupe, Marie-Galante is nicknamed the "island of a hundred windmills" for the old stone sugar mills that dot its rolling cane fields. Life here moves to an unhurried, traditional rhythm: ox-carts still work the land, and a handful of artisanal distilleries produce some of the finest rum in the Caribbean, open to visitors. Around the coast lie long, empty white-sand beaches lapped by turquoise water, framed by coconut palms, and dramatic cliffs and blowholes on the wilder shores. Reached by ferry from Guadeloupe, green, gentle and gloriously authentic, Marie-Galante offers a taste of the old Antilles — sugar, rum and sun-drenched beaches far from the crowds.
