About Mont Aigoual
Crowned by the last staffed mountaintop weather observatory in France, the Mont Aigoual rises to 1,565 metres on the southern edge of the Cévennes, a notorious meeting point of Atlantic and Mediterranean weather where cloud, wind and rain collide. Once bare and eroded, its slopes were clothed in the 19th century by a monumental reforestation programme, and the mountain now carries deep beech and spruce forests and an arboretum that tell that story. From the observatory terrace a huge panorama can reach, on rare clear days, from the Alps to the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. Laced with waymarked trails and drovers' roads, the Aigoual is a fascinating summit of dramatic skies, forest and mountain science.
