About Mont Aiguille

An astonishing flat-topped tower of pale limestone standing alone before the ramparts of the Vercors, the Mont Aiguille rises to 2,086 metres and looks utterly unclimbable — which is precisely why it made history. In 1492, on the orders of the king, a party scaled its sheer walls in what is often called the founding act of mountaineering. Long revered as one of the "seven wonders of Dauphiné", its sheer isolated bulk still draws climbers to its faces and walkers to the meadows at its foot near Chichilianne, from where the classic view is unforgettable. Marmots and eagles haunt its cliffs, and its improbable silhouette remains one of the most striking natural landmarks in the French Alps.
