About Mont d'Or

Rising to 1,463 metres just north of the Swiss border, the Mont d'Or is the highest point of the Doubs and a fine, easily reached balcony over the Jura. From the ridge above Longevilles-Mont-d'Or, a walk along the crest leads to dizzying limestone cliffs plunging toward the Swiss plateau, with a famous panorama that on clear days reaches the whole arc of the Alps from Mont Blanc to the Bernese peaks. In summer the high pastures bloom with gentians and echo with cowbells; in winter the plateau is a hub for cross-country skiing. The mountain even lends its name to the celebrated seasonal cheese made in these valleys. Accessible yet grand, the Mont d'Or is the roof of the French Jura.
