About Mont Mézenc

On the border of the Haute-Loire and the Ardèche, the Mont Mézenc rises to 1,753 metres as the highest summit of the Velay and Vivarais highlands, a broad twin-topped mountain of dark phonolite crowning a wild volcanic plateau. From its windswept crest an immense panorama can reach, on the clearest days, all the way to the snowy wall of the Alps. Its slopes of high pasture blaze with wild daffodils in spring and turn to cross-country skiing in the fierce winters of this high, remote country. Nearby rises the young river Loire, at the foot of the Gerbier-de-Jonc. Rounded, austere and gloriously open, the Mont Mézenc is the rooftop of the volcanic uplands where the Massif Central meets the sky.
