About Mont Ventoux

Visible for miles across the plains of Provence, the Mont Ventoux earns its nickname "the Giant of Provence": a lone limestone summit reaching 1,910 metres, its bare white crown of shattered stone so pale it can look snow-capped in high summer. Made legendary by the Tour de France, its long, punishing road is a pilgrimage for cyclists worldwide, while an observatory crowns the peak. The mountain is a biosphere reserve of remarkable range, its slopes climbing from vineyards and lavender through oak and beech to an almost lunar, wind-scoured summit — the mistral has been clocked here at over 300 km/h. From the top, a vast panorama sweeps from the Alps to the Rhône valley and, on the clearest days, to the Mediterranean.
