About Montagne Sainte-Victoire
The long limestone ridge of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire rears above the countryside east of Aix-en-Provence, its pale southern cliffs glowing gold and rose in the Provençal light. Immortalised in dozens of canvases by Paul Cézanne, who painted it obsessively from every angle, it is as much a cultural icon as a natural one. Walkers climb through pine and scrub to the summit cross, the Croix de Provence, and the ridge-top Priory, for a panorama over vineyards, the Sainte-Baume and the distant sea. A classified Grand Site, the mountain shelters rich flora, birds of prey and traces of dinosaur eggs in its red-clay foothills. Sun-baked and unmistakable, Sainte-Victoire is the enduring emblem of the Aix landscape.
