About Ouessant
The westernmost inhabited land of metropolitan France, Ouessant lies far out in the wild Mer d'Iroise, a low, treeless island of heath and rock battered by Atlantic gales and ringed by some of the most dangerous seas — and most powerful lighthouses — in Europe. The great Créac'h light, one of the strongest in the world, guards the western approaches, and its history is told in a lighthouse museum. Small black Ouessant sheep graze the open moor, and whitewashed houses with brightly painted shutters cluster against the wind. A UNESCO biosphere reserve rich in seabirds, the island is explored on foot or by bike between its dramatic headlands. Remote, elemental and steeped in the lore of the sea, Ouessant is Brittany at its wildest.
