The newest of France's national parks, created in 2019, the Parc national de forêts protects a vast, tranquil expanse of lowland broadleaf woodland spread across the plateaux of Champagne and Burgundy, between Haute-Marne and Côte-d'Or. Unlike the country's dramatic mountain and coastal parks, its treasure is quiet and green: rolling seas of oak and beech, hidden ponds and wetlands, ancient abbeys and a rich woodland wildlife of red and roe deer, wild boar, black storks and rare beetles. At its heart lies an integral reserve where nature is left entirely to itself. Laced with walking and cycling trails and dotted with sleepy villages, this gentle, wooded park offers deep peace and a rare taste of France's great plains forests.
