About Parc national de la Vanoise
Created in 1963 as the very first national park in France, the Parc national de la Vanoise protects a magnificent expanse of the Savoy Alps between the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys, a high country of glaciers, alpine pastures and more than a hundred peaks above 3,000 metres. It was born to save the Alpine ibex from extinction, and today large herds of ibex and chamois roam its slopes alongside marmots, eagles and the returning bearded vulture. Sharing a vast protected frontier with Italy's Gran Paradiso, it offers a superb web of waymarked trails and mountain refuges, from flowery valley walks near Pralognan to high glacier crossings. Pioneering, wildlife-rich and breathtakingly scenic, the Vanoise is one of the jewels of the French Alps.
