About Parc national des Écrins

Straddling the border of the Isère and the Hautes-Alpes, the Parc national des Écrins protects one of the highest and wildest mountain massifs in France, a realm of glaciers, sharp peaks and deep valleys crowned by the 4,102-metre Barre des Écrins. Created in 1973, it is a stronghold of alpine wildlife — ibex, chamois, marmots, golden eagles and the rare bearded vulture — and of a fragile high-mountain flora. Radiating valleys such as the Vénéon, the Vallouise and the Valgaudemar give access to a superb network of trails, mountain refuges and glacier viewpoints, from gentle valley walks to serious ascents. Grand, glaciated and gloriously unspoiled, the Écrins are a paradise for hikers, climbers and lovers of high, silent places.
