Stretching for a hundred kilometres along the Spanish frontier, the Parc national des Pyrénées protects the grandest scenery of the high central Pyrenees — a world of 3,000-metre peaks, glaciers, cascading torrents and immense cliff-ringed cirques. At its heart lie some of the most famous sights in the range: the vast tiered amphitheatre of the Cirque de Gavarnie with the highest waterfall in France, the glacier-hung Vignemale and the jewel-like Lac de Gaube. Isards, marmots and the great griffon and bearded vultures rule the heights, and the last brown bears of France roam its western forests. From spa villages like Cauterets and Gavarnie, superb trails lead into a pristine, protected mountain wilderness of extraordinary beauty.
