About Parc national du Mercantour

In the far south-eastern corner of France, where the Alps plunge toward the Mediterranean, the Parc national du Mercantour protects a spectacular high country of jagged peaks, glacial lakes and deep green valleys along the Italian border. It shelters an exceptional wealth of wildlife — ibex, chamois, mouflon, golden eagles, bearded vultures and the wolves that returned here in the 1990s — and one of Europe's richest alpine floras. At its heart lies the astonishing Vallée des Merveilles, where tens of thousands of Bronze Age engravings are carved into the rock beneath Mont Bégo. From the villages of the Vésubie, Tinée and Ubaye, a magnificent web of trails climbs into this wild, luminous mountain world where the Alps meet Provence.
