Covering much of the mountainous interior of the Île de Beauté, the Parc naturel régional de Corse protects the wild granite heart of the island, from its highest peaks to its deepest forests and hidden mountain villages. Through it runs the legendary GR20, often called the toughest long-distance trail in Europe, linking a chain of soaring summits, glacial lakes and clear river pools. Corsican pine forests, maquis-scented ridges and remote hamlets shelter a wealth of endemic wildlife, including the rare mouflon and the Corsican nuthatch. Away from the famous beaches, this is the other Corsica — high, silent and fiercely beautiful — a paradise for hikers, canyoners and anyone drawn to the untamed mountain soul of the Mediterranean's most spectacular island.
