Covering the highest, southern part of the Vosges massif, the Parc naturel régional des Ballons des Vosges protects a magnificent range of rounded summits — the "ballons" — clothed in forest, high pasture and glacial lakes. From the panoramic Route des Crêtes, which runs the length of the ridge, visitors gaze from the Grand Ballon and the Hohneck across the Alsace plain to the Black Forest and the distant Alps. Its slopes climb from Alsatian vineyards through beech and spruce to open moorland grazed by hardy herds that produce the famous Munster cheese. Walkers, cyclists and skiers share the crests in every season. Green, breezy and steeped in tradition, the park is the wild high country of the Vosges at its most beautiful.
