About Pic du Canigou
Sacred mountain of the Catalans, the Pic du Canigou rises to 2,784 metres above the plains of Roussillon, so isolated and imposing that it was long believed to be the highest in the Pyrenees. Each Midsummer's Eve, flames carried down from its summit rekindle bonfires across Catalonia on both sides of the border, a tradition recognised by UNESCO. Reached by rough tracks and demanding trails from villages like Casteil and Vernet-les-Bains, its summit rewards walkers with an immense panorama that on clear days reaches the Mediterranean and even Barcelona. On its flanks lie the great Romanesque abbey of Saint-Martin-du-Canigou and old iron mines. Wild, symbolic and often the first Pyrenean peak to catch the snow, the Canigou is the proud beacon of French Catalonia.
