About Pic du Midi d'Ossau
Instantly recognisable by its twin-fanged silhouette, the Pic du Midi d'Ossau rises to 2,884 metres above the green valley of Ossau in the Béarn Pyrenees. Though not the range's highest, this old volcanic plug is arguably its most iconic peak, a soaring rock tooth that dominates every view in the valley and serves as the emblem of the region. Its base is ringed by a classic day-hike trail, popular with families and photographers, while its steep faces are a proving ground for climbers. Marmots and the great griffon vultures of the Ossau valley wheel around its cliffs, and pastoral slopes below still ring with the bells of grazing flocks. Bold and unmistakable, "Jean-Pierre", as locals fondly call it, is the soul of the Béarn.
