About Pic Saint-Loup
A slender, tilted ridge of pale limestone soaring above the garrigue north of Montpellier, the Pic Saint-Loup is the great landmark of the Languedoc backcountry. Only 658 metres high, its abrupt southern cliff and hermitage-topped crest make it look far more imposing, and it faces its twin, the sheer wall of the Montagne d'Hortus, across a valley of celebrated vineyards. A steep, scented path climbs through pine and rosemary to the summit chapel and a panorama that stretches from the Cévennes to the Mediterranean. The surrounding Pic Saint-Loup wine appellation, walking trails and climbing crags make it a favourite day out from Montpellier — a taste of wild, sun-baked Mediterranean hills within easy reach of the city.
