About Piton de la Fournaise
One of the most active volcanoes in the world, the Piton de la Fournaise rises to 2,632 metres in the wild south-east of Réunion Island, erupting on average every few months in spectacular but usually harmless fountains and rivers of glowing lava. Its vast summit caldera, the Enclos Fouqué, is a lunar wilderness of black lava fields, cinder cones and steaming fissures, crossed by a superb marked trail that leads walkers across the crater floor to the rim of the main crater. When an eruption lights up the night, crowds gather at safe viewpoints to watch the fireworks of the earth. Awe-inspiring, otherworldly and gloriously alive, "le volcan" is the beating heart of Réunion and one of the great natural spectacles of the planet.
