About Piton des Neiges
The highest summit of Réunion — and of the entire Indian Ocean — the Piton des Neiges soars to 3,070 metres at the heart of the island, the towering, eroded remnant of the ancient volcano that built Réunion. Around it opened the three vast cirques of Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie, walled by dizzying green ramparts. The classic ascent begins deep in the night from a mountain refuge, climbing through forest and volcanic rock to reach the summit for one of the most spectacular sunrises on earth, when the sea of clouds below catches fire and the shadow of the peak stretches across the island. Demanding, dramatic and unforgettable, the Piton des Neiges is the crowning summit of Réunion and the roof of the French tropics.
