About Plateau du Cézallier
Between the Monts Dore and the Cantal, the Plateau du Cézallier unfurls one of the vastest expanses of open high country in France — a rolling ocean of grassland, peat bog and volcanic dome, almost treeless, where the horizon seems endless. This is a landscape of transhumance, where herds of cattle graze the flowered summer pastures around old stone shelters, and of profound silence, broken only by the wind and the calls of curlews and larks. Marked trails and ancient droving roads cross the plateau, drawing walkers, riders and cross-country skiers to its wide, wild spaces. Remote, spacious and hauntingly beautiful, the Cézallier is one of the great unspoiled highland wildernesses of the volcanic Auvergne.
