About Puy Chopine
One of the most distinctive volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys, the Puy Chopine is not a simple cinder cone but a steep, pointed dome, born when thick, viscous lava was thrust up through older rock in a violent eruption, tearing a neighbouring cone apart in the process. Wooded and sharply conical, it stands out among the rounded puys around it, a favourite of geologists who read in its structure the dramatic story of its birth. Trails through the surrounding forest lead to viewpoints over this striking summit and the UNESCO-listed volcanic range beyond. Unusual, steep and geologically remarkable, the Puy Chopine is one of the hidden gems of the Auvergne volcanoes, a reminder of the sheer variety of the region's fiery past.
