About Puy de Dôme
The emblem of Auvergne, the Puy de Dôme is a perfectly shaped volcano rising 1,465 metres above Clermont-Ferrand at the heart of the Chaîne des Puys, a UNESCO World Heritage chain of some eighty dormant volcanoes. A rack railway, the Panoramique des Dômes, spirals to the summit, where a vast panorama unrolls over the whole volcanic range and, on clear days, halfway across France. At the top lie the excavated ruins of a monumental Gallo-Roman temple to Mercury, and the domed slopes are a world capital of paragliding, launching colourful wings into the Auvergne air. Easy to reach yet unmistakably a volcano, the Puy de Dôme is the perfect introduction to France's extraordinary volcanic landscape.
