About Puy de Lassolas
Twinned with the neighbouring Puy de la Vache, the Puy de Lassolas is one of the most spectacular red volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys, a breached scoria cone whose slopes glow in vivid shades of rust and ochre where the iron-rich cinders lie exposed. Some 8,000 years ago the two cones erupted together, spilling a great lava flow — the Cheires — that dammed a valley and created the beautiful Lac d'Aydat below. A popular trail climbs between the two open craters, revealing their colourful interiors and long views over the volcanic range and the lake. Vividly coloured, geologically dramatic and rich in the story of Auvergne's fiery past, the Puy de Lassolas is one of the most memorable of the region's many volcanoes.
