About Puy de Pariou
One of the most perfect volcanoes in the Chaîne des Puys, the Puy de Pariou rises beside its famous neighbour the Puy de Dôme, a textbook cinder cone crowned by a beautifully preserved circular crater nested within an older one. A wooden staircase climbs its scoria slopes to the rim, from where walkers can circle the deep, grassy crater and gaze across the whole chain of some eighty volcanoes, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Formed by explosive eruptions a few thousand years ago, it is one of the youngest and most vivid volcanoes of the range. Accessible, elegant and geologically superb, the Puy de Pariou is a favourite walk in the heart of the Auvergne volcanoes.
