About Puy de Sancy
At 1,885 metres the Puy de Sancy is the highest peak of the Massif Central, the eroded core of a great ancient volcano rising above the spa town of Le Mont-Dore. A cable car and a boardwalk staircase carry visitors close to the summit, where a sweeping panorama takes in the Monts Dore, the Chaîne des Puys and the source of the river Dordogne, which springs from its slopes. In summer the flowered high pastures are laced with hiking trails and echo with the whistle of marmots; in winter the mountain becomes the largest ski area in central France. Wild, rounded and often wreathed in cloud, the Sancy is the rooftop of Auvergne and the heart of its volcanic high country.
