About Puy Ferrand
Rising to 1,854 metres beside the great Puy de Sancy, the Puy Ferrand is one of the highest summits of the Monts Dore in Auvergne, part of the eroded rim of a huge ancient volcano. Linked to the Sancy by a fine ridge walk, it offers a slightly quieter alternative to its famous neighbour, with the same magnificent panorama over the volcanic high country — the Chaîne des Puys, the Cantal and the flowered high pastures where marmots whistle and streams gather to form the young Dordogne. Reached on foot across open moorland high above the spa town of Le Mont-Dore, the Puy Ferrand is a rewarding summit for walkers exploring the rooftop of the Massif Central.
