About Puy Griou
An unmistakable pyramid of grey phonolite soaring above the high valleys of the Cantal, the Puy Griou is one of the most striking and beloved peaks of the massif — a sharp volcanic needle that stands proud among the rounded summits around it. Formed from a plug of hard lava that resisted the erosion which wore down the great Cantal volcano, it demands a genuine climb: a fine, sometimes steep footpath winds up through beech woods and open pasture to its rocky summit, rewarding walkers with a magnificent panorama over the Puy Mary, the Plomb du Cantal and the radiating volcanic valleys. Bold, shapely and satisfyingly wild, the Puy Griou is a favourite objective for hikers exploring the heart of the Cantal mountains.
