About Puy Mary
The unmistakable pyramid of the Puy Mary soars to 1,783 metres at the centre of the Cantal, the remains of one of the largest extinct stratovolcanoes in Europe. Radiating valleys fan out in every direction from its peak, a landscape so striking it is classified as a Grand Site de France. From the Pas de Peyrol — the highest road pass in the Massif Central — a steep footpath climbs in half an hour to the summit and a 360-degree panorama over the volcanic Cantal ranges, high pastures and grazing herds. Wild flowers, ancient buron shepherds' huts and the tang of Cantal cheese complete the scene. Beautiful yet demanding, the Puy Mary is the proud centrepiece of Auvergne's grandest volcanic massif.
