About Vignemale
The highest French peak of the Pyrenees at 3,298 metres, the Vignemale is a dramatic wall of rock and glacier on the border with Spain, towering above the valley of Gavarnie. Its north face and the shrinking Ossoue glacier make it a coveted objective for mountaineers, but its legend owes as much to the eccentric Count Henry Russell, who in the 19th century had caves hewn into the mountain and lived in them, hosting dinners near the summit. Ordinary walkers admire it from the celebrated Lac de Gaube or the high trails of the Pyrenees National Park, where marmots, izards and golden eagles share the heights. Glaciated, remote and steeped in mountaineering history, the Vignemale is the crowning summit of the French Pyrenees.
