About Andlau
Tucked into a green valley on the Alsace Wine Route, the village of Andlau is a charming wine-growing community famous above all for its magnificent abbey church, founded in the 9th century by a Carolingian empress. The Romanesque church of Saints-Pierre-et-Paul is renowned for its extraordinary carved frieze and doorway, among the finest Romanesque sculpture in Alsace, depicting a lively procession of figures, beasts and fantastic scenes. Around the church, the flower-decked village of half-timbered houses winds along the little river Andlau, surrounded by the terraced vineyards of three grands crus. Peaceful, picturesque and steeped in a thousand years of history, wrapped in the vine-clad hills of the central Vosges, Andlau combines exceptional Romanesque heritage with the charm and gastronomy of an Alsatian wine village — a delightful and rewarding stop on the Wine Route.
